Introduction
Dartmoor National Park camping is one of the most authentic outdoor experiences you can have in the United Kingdom. Unlike many structured camping destinations, Dartmoor offers something rare—freedom. The vast, open moorland stretches endlessly across the landscape, dotted with dramatic granite tors, winding rivers, and hidden valleys that feel untouched by time. For those seeking a true escape into nature, Dartmoor National Park camping delivers an experience that goes far beyond a typical weekend getaway.
From the moment you arrive, there is a noticeable shift in atmosphere. The noise of everyday life fades, replaced by the sound of wind moving across the moor and the occasional call of wildlife. Whether you are hiking across rugged terrain, setting up a tent beneath a wide open sky, or simply sitting in silence watching the changing light, Dartmoor has a way of slowing everything down.
What makes Dartmoor even more unique is its reputation as one of the few places in England where controlled wild camping is permitted. This gives campers the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature without the restrictions of traditional campsites, while still respecting the land and its heritage. It is this balance between freedom and responsibility that makes Dartmoor such a special place for outdoor enthusiasts.

Why Choose Dartmoor for Camping
Camping in Dartmoor is not just about where you stay—it is about how you experience the landscape. The park is defined by its raw, natural beauty. Rolling hills blend into open moorland, while granite tors rise dramatically against the skyline, creating a setting that feels both powerful and peaceful at the same time.
One of the most compelling reasons to choose Dartmoor is the sense of space. Unlike crowded campsites, Dartmoor offers room to breathe. You can walk for miles without seeing another person, making it ideal for those who value solitude and quiet reflection. This openness also means uninterrupted views, particularly at sunrise and sunset when the sky transforms into layers of colour across the horizon.
Another defining feature is the diversity of terrain. Within a single day, you can move from open moorland to wooded valleys, from rocky climbs to gentle riverside walks. This variety keeps the experience dynamic and engaging, especially for hikers and explorers.
Dartmoor also has a deep sense of history and character. Ancient stone circles, medieval bridges, and traditional farmsteads are scattered throughout the park, giving it a timeless quality. Camping here is not just about nature—it is about stepping into a landscape shaped by centuries of human and natural interaction.
Best Camping Spots in Dartmoor National Park
Finding the right place to camp in Dartmoor depends on the type of experience you are looking for. For those drawn to wild camping, the northern areas of the park offer some of the most remote and scenic locations. These elevated regions provide sweeping views across the moor, particularly around areas like Yes Tor and High Willhays. Camping here feels exposed in the best possible way, with nothing but open sky above and endless landscape around you.
For a slightly more sheltered experience, the valleys and riverbanks of Dartmoor offer a different kind of beauty. Areas near the River Dart or River Tavy provide natural protection from wind and a more intimate connection with the environment. The sound of flowing water adds a calming element to the camping experience, making these spots particularly appealing for those looking to relax.
If you prefer a balance between nature and convenience, Dartmoor also has a selection of well-maintained campsites. Locations near Princetown and Tavistock provide essential facilities such as toilets and showers, while still offering easy access to walking trails and scenic viewpoints. These sites are ideal for families or first-time campers who want to experience Dartmoor without venturing too far off-grid.

Wild Camping Rules & Legal Guidelines
One of the defining aspects of Dartmoor National Park camping is the ability to wild camp legally—but this comes with important responsibilities. Wild camping is only permitted in specific areas of the park, and campers are expected to follow clear guidelines to protect the environment.
The principle is simple: leave no trace. This means carrying out all waste, avoiding damage to vegetation, and ensuring that the land remains as you found it.
Fires are generally discouraged, as they can cause lasting damage to the moorland.
Camping should be discreet and temporary. Tents should be pitched late in the day and taken down early in the morning, ensuring minimal impact on the landscape. Large groups are not permitted, and campers should avoid farmland and enclosed areas.
By respecting these rules, visitors help preserve Dartmoor’s unique character and ensure that wild camping remains a possibility for future generations.

A reliable, weatherproof tent is essential, as conditions can shift from calm to windy within a short time. Clothing should be layered and designed to handle rain and wind, as Dartmoor’s climate can be unpredictable.
Navigation tools are particularly important. The open landscape can make it easy to lose direction, especially in fog. A map and compass remain essential items, even in the age of digital navigation.
Cooking equipment, such as a camping stove, allows for efficient meal preparation, while a good sleeping bag ensures warmth during colder nights. Being well-prepared allows you to fully enjoy the experience without unnecessary discomfort.
